Our Name
The Nerites technology was inspired by marine mussels and the complex proteins they secrete to adhere to rocks underwater despite pounding waves and tidal pulls. It is fitting, then, that our name refers to a family of molluscs that are abundant in fresh and salt waters around the world. In Greek mythology, Nerites was a handsome young sea god in love with Aphrodite. When she invited him to join the gods at Olympus, however, he decided that he was too attached to the sea to accompany her. Aphrodite became enraged, and transformed Nerites into a shellfish who was forever “stuck” in the sea.
